This page brings together smaller works based on birds, plants, leaves, branches, water, and other natural forms. Some of them were made outdoors, some from close observation at home or in the studio.

I often return to natural subjects when I need to look more carefully and without hurry. A bird on a branch, a dry leaf, a flower stem, grass near the water, or the shape of a stone can hold attention for a long time.

These works are not studies in the academic sense. They are a way of staying with a living form until its movement, weight, or direction becomes visible.

Nature studies also support my larger projects. They sharpen attention to rhythm, silhouette, growth, weather, and small changes of light. Sometimes they remain independent works. Sometimes they become a source for later watercolors, monotypes, or more simplified images.
