Ljutyj 2022

Watercolor cycle, 2022–ongoing

Ljutyj 2022 began during the first weeks of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The title carries a double meaning. In Ukrainian, ljutyj means February, the month when the war began, but it also means fierce, cruel, furious.

This watercolor cycle does not attempt to document war directly. Instead, it reflects the fragile transformation of familiar urban spaces and everyday perception under conditions of instability and threat.

The works focus on details that entered ordinary city life during wartime: anti-tank obstacles near residential streets, damaged buildings, checkpoints, disrupted infrastructure, temporary constructions, altered routes and rhythms.

Many early works were created on the reverse sides of older sheets. Small in scale and immediate in execution, they became a way to preserve observation and emotional presence at a moment when direct speech about war felt impossible.
